Cadenas’s poetry books are Cuadernos del destierro, 1960, Falsas maniobras, 1966, Intemperie, 1977, Memorial, 1970, Amante, 1983, and Gestiones, 1992; anthologies of his work have been published by bid & co. editor and Monte Ávila (Venezuela), Fondo de Cultura Económica (México), Ediciones Visor and Editorial Pre-Textos (Spain) and Fata Morgana (France) among others.

His reflections on literature and life are contained in the essays in Realidad y literatura, 1979, Anotaciones, 1983, En torno al lenguaje, 1985, Dichos, 1992 and Apuntes sobre san
Juan de la Cruz y la mística, 1995.

Of his work, bid & co. editor has published Amante (2003, livre d’artiste), Poemas selectos (2004), Amant (2004, French version of Amante), Lover (2004, bilingual edition of Amante), Poèmes choisis/Poemas selectos (2004, co-published with Ecrits des Forges-Quebec), El taller de al lado (2005, a collection of his translations), and the present volume of Selected Poems.

Cadenas has been awarded the National Prize for Literature and the National Prize for Essay, as well as doctorates Honoris causa from Universidad de los Andes and Universidad Central de Venezuela; he has recently (2009) won the FIL Guadalajara award for “Literatura y Lenguas Romances”.

He is one of the most important poets in the history of Venezuelan literature and an outstanding figure in the poetry and thought of the contemporary Spanish speaking world.
